Welcome to the Department of Turkish Language and Literature at Samsun University!

Literature, which is formed by the language, is the most persistent and universal form of expression which gathers all the knowledge and experience. The responsibility of the Turkish Language and Literature departments is to try to interpret the existence of the human, which is temporary and individual in the face of what is permanent and universal, in the context of language, as well as the analysis of the Turkish language and literature on the historical and theoretical level.

With this perspective, students who will receive education in our department will not be considered as passive individuals in the process of learning. Likewise, faculty members are not the only ones who can provide knowledge in the class. Faculty members and students are interlocutors of free, critical and playful dialogue on the question what literature and language are or should be. Therefore, each student will  determine and shape the meaning of literature during playful dialogue, thus they seem to be already contacted with permanent and universal word.

This game on the one hand gives the student the possibility to reinterpret Turkish language and literature in the open way, on the other hand it encourages to take responsibility  in the context of confrontation regarding the future of Turkish language and literature and it encourages to take into consideration comparison of different cultures and literatures, always, from pluralistic perspectives.

Literature is crucial in this age of individualism and innovation we live in, since its nature is an art of seeking unspoken words. In this respect, on the basis of classical scientific thought, literature is not simply treated as an objective subject of knowledge, but as an interdisciplinary form of discourse that enables the liveliness of the relationship between science and creative thought.  Thus, the Department of Turkish language and literature at Samsun University, aims to educate young literature researches who are able to create free and critical thoughts on the profound historical and literary level of high Turkish culture, and who are able to consciously continuing to from and to cherish Turkish culture with their own creative and academic outputs.

Upon graduation from our department, after taking all necessary certificates, graduate can work as teacher in all public and private schools affiliated to the Ministry of Education, as well as teach Turkish as a foreign language. Moreover, they can work at Turkish or world universities, in departments related with studies, as teachers of Turkish language.

Furthermore, in our department throughout four years students’ critical and creative reading, systematic research and the ability of making a presentation, oral and written communication skills will be improved during obligatory and optional classes. These capabilities enable to work in printed publishers like books, newspaper or magazine or digital publishers like radio, television and internet or to become a writer, editor, printer, proofreader, programmer and so forth. Additionally, it permits to work as librarian, archivist, museum curator, second-hand bookseller, advertiser, tourist guide or to do a job in areas such as public relations, marketing, human resources and communications consultancy.
